"Language as a Window into Human Nature" - Lecture by Steven Pinker

Here's the presentation about how to make reference to textual sources in an active way, using 1st person and synthesis approach. Have your completed final draft plus completed annotated bibliography for Monday, September 30.
Choose a college or university of interest to you. Find three visual images associated with that college: photographs, maps, charts, tables, graphs... Copy and paste images along with any associated captions into a word processed document that analyzes the composition of the images, and how elements of the image (as well as accompanying text) reveal what face the college or university is trying to show to prospective students and their families. What argument does this group of images make about why an individual student should consider this choice? (500-700 words)
Advertising Analysis
Write a well-developed response the evaluates the purpose and effect of specific design choices made in the advertisement(s). Consider overall layout (including focus, alignment, proximity, contrast, and repetition) along with use of narrative, diction, color, and persuasive appeals (ethos, logos, pathos). Consider why these choices would be effective given the audience being addressed.
If considering more than one advertisement for the same product, what are the major comparisons between choices made in marketing that product and what does that reveal about different strategies being used to market to different audiences?

Choose one eulogy, speech, political document, letter, or blog available in the media on any topic. Print it out, read, re-read, and annotate. Write a 500-600 word response analyzing the rhetorical strategies used by the speaker to appeal to his/her audience and to accomplish his/her purpose (to inform, to entertain, to persuade?).

Using the two photographs chosen for Wednesday's class (SL) or one of the photos as well as a complementary written text on a similar topic as the photograph (HL), complete a writing modeled after IB Paper 1.
Paper 1 (HL): Comparative textual analysis
Analyze, compare and contrast the following two texts. Include comments on the similarities and differences between the texts and the significance of context, audience, purpose, and formal and stylistic features.
Homework for Wednesday January 15
Read the photocopied article “Photographic Icons: Fact, Fiction, or Metaphor?”
Choose a recent event in international news. Locate two photographs used in print or digital reporting about this event. Copy and paste both images into a word processing document along with any captions and publication information (photographer, place, date). Bring to class for Wednesday.
Homework for Monday January 13
Through study of your chosen image from the Pulitzer Prize website, write a well-developed response that answers the following questions: How do PROXIMITY, ALIGNMENT, REPETITION, CONTRAST, and FOCUS help understand the composition of the image. How does the caption employ rhetorical strategies to extend the argument made by the image? Make repeated specific reference to the details of the photo or the caption to support your conclusions.
600-800 words

Click on "Works" tab to view the series of thumbnails; double-click for larger versions. Browse images and select one with details you can understand and discuss in depth. Read the caption that explains the photo and consider ways that the caption shapes your understanding of the situation being photographed.
